NEWS: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE - AUGUST 2010

For the month of August the chapter gathered at the Paradise RV Park south of Cassville, MO. Uniquely, this commercial park is located within Roaring River State Park. Joining us this month were the Lynches, Weavers, Severes, Cooks, Mathes’, Welches, Careys, Nashes and Genrichs.

We started off with our traditional evening reception, this time on Wednesday. We were served a tasty fare of chicken salad, green beans, cranberry sauce, seasoned toast and frozen fruit salad. This was all served by our hosts the Nashes and Genrichs plus Sue Carey. During and after the reception everyone caught up on what had been happening during the last two months. Of course, after the discussion dust had settled the card games commenced.

Thursday morning we gathered at the park café for a chapter-sponsored breakfast. They are normally not open on Thursday but opened for our benefit and served up all the pancakes we wanted. We then adjourned to the front porch and occupied all of the rocking chairs. Almost a scene out of Deliverence. Mid-morning we headed for the Severe’s lake house. John and Lucille had offered to host everyone at their lake getaway on Table Rock Lake. On the way to the lake our caravan stopped at the Golden Pioneer Museum in Golden, MO. I will be the first to admit that this museum is “out of the way.” Of course, that describes most of the area. They have quite a number of collections, including glassware, minerals, arrowheads, firearms, etc. Everyone was impressed at the extent of the collections located in this remote free museum. Upon arriving at the lake the ladies whipped up some cookies while “Captain John” took several of us out for a spin on the lake in his ski boat. It was a little warm during midday but at least we did not have to row. Upon returning to the house John fired up his grill and cooked a herd of hotdogs for everyone. With the dogs came baked beans, cole slaw, chips and cookies. I want to personally thank the Severes for the hospitality they extended to the chapter by opening their home for our use. As the afternoon wore on we drifted back to the RV park. Toward dark, back in the park, we gathered once again at the park café, this time for an ice cream treat. For one buck you get a dish of ice cream from a selection of at least eight choices. After everyone had polished off their dessert I looked around and saw that the card game had started once again.

Friday morning saw us, once again, at the park café for breakfast. They have a varied menu of typical breakfast items; pancakes, eggs, French toast, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, etc. Breakfast was followed by more rocking and talking. While sitting out there a rainstorm erupted and lasted for quite a while. The cool air was quite a change. For the rest of the day everyone was on their own. There was a rumor that two couples spent most of the afternoon searching the trails and roads for fuel. That evening we journeyed to the Roaring River Lodge for dinner. Later, the ever-present card game was underway. At the same time I gave a video presentation on Naval Aviation.
Saturday morning we got together for a final time at the park café for our get-a-way breakfast. This month Wayne lost his first-to-leave medal to Jack and Dolores Mathes.

October Rally. This rally will be at the Cedar Oaks RV Park in Grove, OK. Most importantly, note the date of this rally which was dictated by campground availability. We will be introducing you to the chapter officers for 2011. Some of the members will be arriving directly from the Six State Rally at Shreveport. This is our last rally of 2010 so we would like to see as many as of you as possible. You will need to call the park to make your own parking reservations (800-880-8884). If you wish to visit the Cedar Oaks web site, it is:
