Okay, it seems
that the cold weather has finally gone away and we have settled into a typical
spring, rain and all. After last year I am sure we can all agree that the rain
is welcome.
As Thursday
closed we gathered at the McPherson RV Ranch and Horse Motel for our opening
day reception. A somewhat smaller group than last month due to other
commitments such as graduations. In attendance this month were the Severes,
Cooks, Drennons, Couchs, Genrichs, Penningtons and Jack Mathes the rally host.
The reception food table held many tasty morsels such as a variety of sandwiches,
chips and dip, and banana nut cake. Phyllis and Dick Pennington (our newlyweds)
provided a champagne punch. During the reception Phyllis and Dick opened the
wedding presents brought by the chapter members. We also found out later that
Thursday was the Severe’s 59th wedding anniversary. It was great
that they spent it with us rather than some tacky far away Tahiti beach. By the
time everyone left we had caught up on the club gossip and found out what was
planned for the rest of the weekend.
Friday started overcast and cool with
the prospect of sunny skies and warmer temperatures as we gathered for a
breakfast of pastries, orange juice and coffee. After breakfast we boarded
busses for the trip downtown for the annual School Days parade. Jack Mathes had
arranged for our transportation to the parade and seating arrangements at the
parade right on the front row. We all appreciated the transportation and
seating. While watching the parade I heard that they had expected 40,000
viewers at the parade. Promptly at 10:30 the parade started and 90 minutes
later we had seen floats, politicians, kings and queens, VFW and American
Legion marchers, Shriners, old cars, horses, tractors, fire trucks and 21
bands. Although everyone seems bundled up the weather was really quite pleasant. This region really supports the parade which is only one part of a
two-week celebration. That evening we went to the McPherson Country Club for
dinner. This is a private club with a nine-hole golf course designed by the
same man who did the original layout of the Augusta National course, site of
the Masters golf tournament.
Saturday we were up and at it again and
headed to Montana Mikes for a buffet breakfast and then headed back downtown to
view a unique School Days-themed sand sculpture that was created over nine
days. After that we returned to the park. The Couchs then returned to Kansas
City due to Sunday commitments. During the day the ladies had one of their
robust card games while the guys attended to some coach maintenance with the
improved weather. That evening we all went to Knakies BBQ for dinner. This is a
very popular eating establishment. When we arrived the parking lot was almost
full and customers were coming from all directions. We then returned to the
park where most members gave it up after a fairly full day of events.
Sunday morning saw preparations for
getting under way and gathering for our get-away breakfast. In fairly short
order we attended to refueling and packing up the “stuff”.
June. There will be no rally in June so
that we can support the FMCA Family Reunion in Gillette, Wyoming, June 19 – 22.
This year it is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of FMCA.
July rally. One more reminder that this
rally will be at the Deer Creek Valley RV Park, Topeka, KS, July 18-21. You
will need to contact the park no later
than June 1 to make a
reservation (785-357-8555). Even if you have not made a decision, make a
reservation. If you decide later not to go you can cancel the reservation.
